Chairman's Report
This has been a very interesting year for all allotment holders. The weather has been just right for growing, warm and dry to start the season, a bit of rain when the children were on holiday and dry as soon as they went back to school. Leading to some very good crops, as was shown at the produce show with an exultant turn out of some fine examples of the veg (including cauliflower) that can be grown in the soil that we have to put up with around here.
Walking around the sites this year I have noticed how everybody seems to be working harder and that is a pleasure to see. All that I spoke to were upbeat at the thought of a good harvest and would there be enough room in the freezer for it all. I know mine is full to bursting (not with cauliflower).
On a more personal note as most of you know I was contacted by BBC 3 Counties Radio and asked to do a piece on allotments reluctantly I agreed thinking what have I let myself in for. So a date and time was set and with 4inches of snow on the ground I met a thin, pale young lad at the allotment his name Tim Wheeler. We seemed to hit it off right away and so about every two weeks we would meet up for more bizarre tales from the allotment. I had a good laugh all summer, I still can’t work out who is the more mental Tim or myself. This ended at the produce show when Tim presented the prizes and thank you for that Tim.
Now the hard work starts the dreaded winter digging. I was on the allotment yesterday to dig a bit over to put some garlic in, it was rock hard so the garlic will have to wait, we have until the shortest day and Rome wasn’t built in a day so plenty of time.
